Ingredients of our Food

When we take food, it starts being broken down by your teeth and the enzymes in your saliva. Digestion begins. Then the chemicals in your stomach work digesting the food into its six nutrients categories.
  • water
  • carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Proteins
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
Out of these only carbohydrates, fats, proteins provide energy.

Nutrients
Nutrients are components of food that are needed by the body inadequate amounts to grow and lead healthy life. An essential nutrient is a nutrient required for normal body functioning that either cannot be synthesized by the body at all, or cannot be synthesized in amounts adequate for good health. Thus these essential nutrients must be obtained from a external dietary source.

There are two types of Nutrients.
  • Micro nutrients
  • Macro nutrients
A balanced diet contain both macro and micro nutrients

MicroNutrients - Micro nutrients are nutrients needed for life in small quantities. The Micro minerals include iron, cobalt, chromium, copper, iodine, manganese, selenium, zinc and molybdenum. They are dietary minerals needed by the human body in very small quantities (generally less than 100micrograms/day).
Micro nutrielts are things like
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals.
MacroNutrients - The chemical elements humans consume in the largest quantities. They provide energy to the body and enable the cell to grow. These are compounds humans consume in the largest quantities and which provide bulk energy.
Three main macro nutrients are
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Proteins
Water and atmospheric oxygen also must be consumed in large quantities, but are not always considered "food" or "nutrients".

PhytoNutrients -These are plant based nutrients. These are found only in fruits and vegetables and plants based diet as there are thousands of phytonutrients supplied in a plant-rich diet. These are not found synthetically. Phytonutrients are found in plant-based food sources, including brightly-colored fruits and vegetables.
